10 Product Photography Tips That Don't Need a Studio
Window light, cheap backdrops, phone camera settings, and the post-processing steps that make DIY product photos look professional.
You don't need a lighting rig or a DSLR to get professional-looking product photos. You need consistent technique — and a good cleanup step at the end. Here's the short list that covers 90% of it.
Shooting
- Use window light. A large window with indirect daylight is the best free softbox there is. Avoid direct sun — it creates harsh shadows.
- Put a white sheet or card opposite the window to bounce light back and soften shadows on the dark side of the product.
- Shoot from a tripod (or prop your phone on a stack of books). Consistent framing across a whole catalog matters more than any single perfect shot.
- Fill the frame, but leave breathing room — you'll want margin when you crop to a square or 4:5 later.
- Lock exposure and focus on your phone (tap and hold on the product) so shots stay consistent across the session.
Setup
- A large sheet of white paper curved behind and under the product makes an instant seamless backdrop for a few pounds.
- Clean the product. Dust and fingerprints that are invisible to your eye are obvious at full resolution.
- Shoot every angle in one session — front, back, detail, in-use. Re-shooting later with different light is how catalogs end up looking inconsistent.
The cleanup step most people skip
Even a good DIY shot has an imperfect background — a paper crease, a slight color cast, a soft shadow edge. This is where background removal earns its keep: cut the product out, place it on pure white or keep it transparent, and the DIY origins disappear. It's the difference between 'shot at home' and 'shot professionally', and with AI it takes seconds per image rather than minutes of pen-tool work.
Do these ten things and your listings will look like they came from a studio — because visually, they did.
